Henry’s Candies and the Dexter candy bar story
The Dexter candy shop sold 'Momma Henry' bars, and the family name is tied to the story of the Oh Henry! bar.
By Garrett Pruitt
For years, drivers on K-15 knew to stop in Dexter for candy.
Henry’s Candies was a small family candy factory on the highway. Local accounts credit Tom Henry of Arkansas City, of the same family, with inventing the “Oh Henry!” candy bar. The Dexter shop sold “Momma Henry” bars, which were very close to the original.
The factory closed in 2024.
Dexter also holds the Blackdog Festival, named for the Black Dog Trail, the Osage route also called the Great Osage Trail.
