Downtown Winfield has a few buildings older than most of the families living here. The Cowley County National Bank Building at 820-822 Main is one of them.
It was finished in 1886, a two-and-a-half-story limestone building in the Second Empire style. Local architects W.A. and W.J. Ritchie designed it.
It opened as the Farmers’ Bank. From 1891 to 1922, the Cowley County National Bank did business there, and the name stuck.
The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, one of the earlier listings in town. Its stonework is worth a slow look the next time you are on that block.
